I would expect that as the cost of equipment goes down we'll see pressure for looser patent regimes in biotech, etc, as well, again because the fraction of total hassle caused by dealing with patents will increase. Likewise, the anti-patent pressure in the software world started in relatively protected enviroments, like MIT, where the equipment, although expensive to buy off the shelf, was free to the actual users; and anti-patent pressure has grown as computers and internet connections have got cheaper and development tools have got better (development tools, I should say, are one area where Open Source-based innovation has been world-beating -- I couldn't imagine developing Java without Eclipse).
