summary:
Patent Offices are burdened by a back-log of cases to be examined, the EPO being no exception. The so-called ,,Tiger Economies" of the East will increasingly file patent applications, and they will not want to be without a European Patent. At the same time, the traditional patent scenario ,,file, obtain grant, sue competitors" is being increasingly questioned. Should drugs ,,on pat- ient" be denied developing countries, particularly drugs for HIV, treatment of Malaria and the like? Should standardisation and interoperability be ,,blocked" by computer-related patents?
