Go to http://www.ftc.gov/os/comments/intelpropertycomments/stallmanrichard.pdf to read Richard Stallman's speech about why software should not be patentable. It was written in 2002 but applies even more so today.

If everyone in the EU can keep software patenting out then everyone there will be much better for it. I know here in the US we're literally paying for it in several different ways.
